Clover Flex: Troubleshoot Ethernet Connection
Last Updated:What's in this article?
Enabling Ethernet network connection
- Swipe down from the top right corner of the screen and tap Settings.
NOTE: Alternatively, tap the Settings app icon on the Home screen.
- In Wireless & Networks, slide Ethernet switch, to ON. (Make sure that the WiFi slider above it is switched OFF.)
NOTE: Clover Mini or Station will automatically connect to a known wireless network, so turn the Wi-Fi connection OFF to force the Clover device to connect via Ethernet.
- Tap Ethernet tab. The Clover device loads the network information the device is connected to, including the MAC address, IP address, a Proxy settings option, and the network name and connection status.
- If not connected Connected (gray Ethernet with no ). It is not connected via Ethernet
- A dialog box to select between DHCP and Static Ethernet displays.
- If the network uses a dynamic IP to connect, ensure that DHCP is selected.
- If the network uses a static IP to connect, ensure that Staticis selected and that the Static-specific fields are filled out appropriately.
- You can contact your ISP for information about your static and dynamic IP connections. Information that may be needed to complete the IP settings should include Gateway, Subnet Mask, DNS1 and DNS2.
- Tap Proxy Settings option. Ensure that all of the Proxy Settings fields are cleared and tap doneto accept any changes.
NOTE: Proxy server settings can interfere with the Ethernet connection. It is advisable to remove them to avoid problems.
- To test that the Clover device is properly connected to the network via Ethernet, tap the home screen icon to return to the Home screen.
- Tap Help app icon.
- If Help app loads and you can tap links to access content on Clover Help, then the Clover device is connected to the Internet.
Disabling other network connections
Once Ethernet is connected and there is a valid Connected status on the specific Ethernet network, you may still experience trouble connecting through your Clover device. If so, other network connections may be interfering with the Ethernet connection to the Clover. To disable other network connections, use the following procedure:
- Tap Settings app and ensure that the Bluetooth and wireless connections are disabled.
- Ensure that bluetooth and wireless connections are disabled. If Bluetooth or wireless is enabled, tap the On toggle button to disable the connection. The buttons will switch to Offmode.
NOTE: Clover recommends disabling any secondary internet connections. If your primary is Ethernet, please disable your Wi-Fi to ensure that Clover is connecting through your primary and stable connection.
Reboot to properly reconnect to the internet and fix signal interruptions
If your Clover device has an issue, you may need to reboot the device in an attempt to resolve the issue. Some reasons to reboot are if:
- You changed your network settings but the device does not recognize the new settings.
- Your Clover device is working over the network, but showing signs of random dropout of the network signal.
- Your Ethernet works with some devices and not with others.
If the Clover device has a hardwired (Ethernet cable) connection directly to the modem, make sure the Wi-Fi receiver on the Clover device is turned OFF. This eliminates confusion in the Clover operating system on which network signal to use.
- Verify that the Ethernet cable is plugged into the Clover device and also to the Router. To assure the connection is functional, unplug each end of the Ethernet cable and then plug it back into each device until the connector “clicks” into the receptacle socket.
- Verify that your Internet service is active at the Modem/Router.
- Most Internet Service Providers provide modems that have LED lights that display the status of the network connection. Check the status of the LEDs to determine if the Internet connection is active (typically a green light).
- If the modem does not display an active network connection (red light or no light), then check the power to the modem and reboot the modem by powering it down and then back on.
- Test the Ethernet connection at the modem/router by connecting another computing device (such as another PC) to test Internet access.
- Reboot your Clover device.
Testing the Internet Connection
If your Clover device is having trouble connecting over the Ethernet, try connecting to the same network cable through another computing device, such as a laptop PC or by using a smart phone to test the wireless connection. You can contact their Internet Service Provider (ISP) to get detailed instructions on how to connect to the network through another computing device.
- If you cannot connect to the Internet through your network using another computer, then the network may be having trouble. If so, you should contact your ISP.
- If you can connect to your Internet network using another computer, but still cannot connect to the internet through Clover, verify the following:
- The Clover device and the other computer are both connected to the same network (from the available networks list).
- The second computing device can load clover.com, but the Clover device is not able to load Clover Help after opening the Help app from the home screen.
- The second computing device is using the same IP information to connect as the Clover device. This means that both are connecting with the same Static IP or Dynamic IP settings, and if Static IP, the same information shared between the devices. For more information on confirming this, you should contact your ISP.
- If the above steps do not resolve the issue, and the Internet connection is working on one device, but not the Clover device, then the problem may not be with the ISP. Contact Support by clicking “Call Me” from the device or your Clover Web Dashboard.
Transaction timeouts / slow response times
In order to properly process transactions, the Internet connection must be stable and have sufficient bandwidth. You should use your own Internet Service Provider (ISP) rather than a shared network if possible.
- Minimize other high-traffic activity on your local network, such as streaming music or videos.
- Increase the bandwidth on the local network to minimize disruption of the Clover’s communication and processing, by reducing the number of other devices connected.
- The local bandwidth varies based on the number of devices connected to your network and the volume of transactions they normally process.
- We recommend a hard-wired (Ethernet cable) high-speed Internet connection, such as DSL or cable, rather than a hotspot. Particularly, if you plan to use more than one Clover device or any peripheral equipment such as a Kitchen Printer.
- Hotspot network connections could limit the bandwidth required for normal Clover communication. If you plan to use a hot spot, it should be dedicated to the Clover (i.e., use another hotspot for other Internet needs).
